EMITTING AND Lyα ABSORBING GALAXIES
The spectral properties of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) offer a means to isolate pure samples displaying either dominant Lyα in absorption or Lyα in emission using broadband information alone. We present criteria developed using a large z ∼ 3 LBG spectroscopic sample from the literature that enables large numbers of each spectral type to be gathered in photometric data, providing good statistics...
متن کاملLarge-Scale Simulations of Reionization
We use cosmological simulations to explore the large-scale effects of reionization. Since reionization is a process that involves a large dynamic range from galaxies to rare bright quasars we need to be able to cover a significant volume of the universe in our simulation without losing the important small scale effects from galaxies. Here we have taken an approach that uses clumping factors der...
متن کاملLarge-scale Flows as a Cosmological Probe
We review the use of peculiar velocities of galaxies as a probe of cosmological models. We put particular emphasis on comparison of the peculiar velocity and density fields, focussing on the discrepancies between various recent analyses. We discuss the limitations of the commonly used linear bias model, which may lie at the heart of some of the current controversies in the field.
متن کاملLuminosity Functions of Lyα Emitting Galaxies and Cosmic Reionization of Hydrogen
Recent observations imply that the observed number counts of Lyα emitters (LAEs) evolved significantly between z = 5.7 and z = 6.5. It has been suggested that this was due to a rapid evolution in the ionisation state, and hence transmission of the IGM which caused Lyα flux from z = 6.5 galaxies to be more strongly suppressed. In this paper we consider the joint evolution of the Lyα and UV lumin...
متن کاملLarge-Scale Structure in the Distribution of Galaxies as a Probe of Cosmological Models
The last 20 years have seen an explosion in our understanding of the large-scale distribution and motions of galaxies in the nearby universe. The field has moved from a largely qualitative, morphological description of the structures seen in the galaxy distribution, to a rich and increasingly rigorous statistical description, which allows us to constrain cosmological models. New surveys just no...
